Folic Acid

Folic acid is a B-vitamin (also known as Vitamin B9) that plays a crucial role in many of the body’s processes, including the formation of red blood cells and the synthesis of DNA. It is important for proper fetal development and is often recommended for women who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant. A deficiency in folic acid can lead to a form of anemia, as well as neural tube defects in the developing fetus. Folic acid can be found in foods such as leafy greens, citrus fruits, and fortified grain products, and is also available as a dietary supplement. Blood tests to measure folic acid levels are used to diagnose deficiencies and monitor treatment.
